 About the ProgramHighmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia members suffering from heart disease or the risk factors for developing heart disease are eligible to participate in the world renowned Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease. Highmark West Virginia will cover the cost of this (up to) one-year, Lifestyle modification Program. Highmark West Virginia is partnering with 5 West Virginia hospitals to deliver the Ornish Program. The hospitals have specially trained health care professionals, including medical directors, Program directors, nurse case managers, registered dietitians, exercise physiologists, stress management instructors and group support facilitators to provide one-on-one instruction to Program participants in a caring, supportive environment. The Ornish Program uses nutrition, moderate aerobic exercise, stress management and group support to slow, stop and even reverse heart disease in men and women. It also is used to prevent heart disease in people who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a strong family history of heart disease and diabetes. People who follow the four components often report feeling better in a couple of weeks and sometimes just days after starting the Program. In fact, the clinical benefits of the Ornish Program have been demonstrated with participants throughout the country. It's important to note that all participants remain under the care of their own personal physicians and cardiologists who are regularly updated by the Ornish team. Employees and health plans embrace the Ornish Program because it is a very cost-effective benefit that is highly valued by employees and plan members. Not only can the program help people improve their health and quality of life; many participants are able safely to avoid costly heart surgery.
